Western Australia No. 8

LOCATION
The property is situated about 60 kilometres east of Mount Magnet.

CONSTRUCTION
The buildings on the property consist of a homestead, a workers house, a cottage and several sheds.

THE SYSTEM
The system consists of 20 solar modules mounted on a tracking frame, a battery bank, an inverter and a 7 kVA diesel generator. The supply to the houses and cottage is 240 volt AC and equipment used includes a refrigerator, various power tools and the usual range of household appliances. The diesel generator is operated when necessary, for example when a welder is in use.

INSTALLATION
The cost of the components of the system and installation would be about $21,000 at today's prices.

RELIABILITY
The system has proved extremely reliable.

MAINTENANCE
No maintenance has been required other than routine topping-up of batteries and servicing of the diesel generator.

RUNNING COSTS
Costs will vary from year to year and are likely to increase as the system ages. Battery replacement is likely to be the major item and it would be prudent to assume a need to replace batteries about every 5 to 10 years. The generator uses about 200 litres of diesel a year and is run on average about 3 hours each week.
Due care and proper maintenance will prolong the life of most components of the system.

REASON FOR SELECTION
The owners chose the system because connection to the grid was prohibitive and a solar hybrid system could meet their needs.
