LOCATION
The property is near Moses Rock on the south west coast, about 14 km south of Yallingup.
CONSTRUCTION
The house has rammed earth walls on a concrete slab and a Colorbond roof.
THE SYSTEM
For most of the year a Survivor S5000 wind turbine provides the electricity required for the house and there are four 75 watt solar modules to provide additional power during periods of light wind.
A Siemens Sunsine inverter provides 240 volt AC power for the usual range of household appliances. General household lights are 24 Volt DC halogen light globes. Water is heated by a solar water heater with a wood stove booster.
INSTALLATION
The wind turbine and inverters have been in use for several years. In June 1994 four BP Solar 75 watt panels were added to provide power in periods of low wind strength.
The original system cost about $26,000 and the new solar modules and regulator/controller cost about $4000.
RELIABILITY
The system has proved extremely reliable.

MAINTENANCE
Little maintenance is required other than routine topping-up of batteries and servicing of the auxiliary diesel generator.
RUNNING COSTS
Costs will vary from year to year and are likely to increase as the system ages. Battery replacement is likely to be the major item and it would be prudent to assume a need to replace batteries about every 5 to 10 years.
Due care and proper maintenance will prolong the life of most components of the system.
REASON FOR SELECTION
The cost of connection to the grid was estimated to be greater than the total system cost at the time of installation.
