DPIE Case Studies

On the first of March 1995 Senator Nick Sherry Minister for Primary Industries and Energy launched the Renewable Energy Promotion Program.

The Renewable Energy Promotion Program (REPP) was a Federal Government initiative, administered by the former Commonwealth Department of Primary Industries and Energy.

REPP operated over three years and was designed to promote the use of renewable energy technologies where they are economically viable, with particular emphasis on stand alone power supply systems. For this reason the program targetted those living in rural and remote areas, isolated from the electricity grid.

REPP aimed to:

  • promote the use of renewable energy in situations where this is economic with subsequent reduction in the production of greenhouse gases;
  • demonstrate that remote area power supplies using renewable energy are reliable and effective, and easy to install and maintain;
  • reduce the need for expensive electricity connectionsin rural areas;
  • enhance the quality of life in rural communities without access to grid electricity; and
  • expand the market for renewable energy products and assist the further development of the Australian industry, which is already a world leader.

The REPP established the renewable energy display at Murdoch University which has continued to provide a valuable service to the community and is now managed by RISE.

Renewable Energy was shifted from the the former Department of Primary Industries and Energy when it was renamed the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australia and responsibility for Resources and Energy was transferred to the Department of Industry, Science and Resources.

We wish to acknowledge the Department of Industry, Science and Resources for permission to reproduce the material relating to the REPP program in a form suitable for the internet.
