Geothermal energy has been used by humans for many centuries in applications such as space and water heating, cooking, and medicinal bathing. The first geothermal power generation plant was constructed in 1904 in Larderello, Italy. This had a capacity of 250 kW, and used geothermal steam to generate electricity. The second geothermal power station built was in the 1950’s at Wairakei, New Zealand. This was followed by the Geysers in California in the 1960’s.
