Sustainable Energy for Power Systems in Remote Areas

Renewable Remote Power Generation Programme (RRPGP) Industry Development Project

In the areas of Australia not serviced by a main electricity grid, electricity generated from renewable sources is often an effective way of reducing reliance on fossil fuel for electricity generation. The Renewable Remote Power Generation Programme (RRPGP) provides financial support to increase the use of renewable generation technologies in remote parts of Australia that presently rely on fossil fuels for electricity generation. This program provides rebates for renewable energy systems replacing fossil fuel generation in 'off-grid' and 'fringe of grid' areas.

The RRPGP is managed by the Australian Government's Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts. This funding is administered in Western Australia by the Sustainable Energy Development Office (SEDO). The Australian Government annoucement provided up to $5.5 million funding over four years to RISE in 2004.

Through this funding RISE has industry support activities in several key areas:

  • Testing, through ongoing support of ResLab
  • Standards Development
  • Professional development & training
  • Demonstration of Fuel Cells
  • Demonstration of small scale Wind Turbine technology
  • Provision of information on Sustainable Energy for use in remote areas
