There are 500 different Aboriginal nations around the continent, many with distinctive cultures, beliefs and languages. Prior to the arrival of the British Colonisers in 1788 Aboriginal people (sometimes referred to as the first Australians) inhabited the whole of Australia and Torres Strait Islanders lived on the islands between Australia and Papua New Guinea, in what is now called the Torres Strait.
Today, the Australian Indigenous population makes up 2.4% of the total Australian population. This works out to about 460,000 out of 22 million people. To read more about this, click on the link below:
