Although many LGBTI Australians live healthy and happy lives, research has shown that a disproportionate number of experience poorer mental health outcomes and have higher risk of suicidal behaviours than their peers.
These health outcomes are directly related to experiences of stigma, prejudice, discrimination and abuse on the basis of being LGBTI. Because of this, many people who are part of the LGBTI community will not come out until they are sure it is safe to do so.
