National Reconciliation Week 2018
National Reconciliation Week 2018 runs from 27th May – 3rd June.
The theme for this year is ‘Don’t Keep History A Mystery: Learn. Share. Grow’
It is a chance for everyone to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island culture and history.
Morning tea with the Eagles
Rise held several events and activities across Perth. The first was an event at Centenary House in Koongamia. This day centre is the base for the Moorditj Mia group.
Our friends at the Kangaroo Club and Aboriginal students at La Salle College joined us for morning tea.
Players from the West Coast Eagles visited too! Willy Rioli and Lewis Jetta stopped by to yarn with the group and sign posters.
Indigenous Liaison Officer Phil Narkle chatted about the club’s Reconciliation Action Plan and the importance of hearing stories from elders.
The gents were very generous in their time, taking lots of photos! They also drew a raffle, with the main prize an Eagles blanket.
Art focus at Armadale
At our social centre in Armadale, guests enjoyed an art-focused day.
The Moorditj Social Group completed a set of three canvasses. Students from the Girls Academy at Challis Primary help create one of the pieces.
The artworks were presented to Regional Manager Lynn and General Manager Shaun, who joined in the lunch. Unfortunately the storm front rolled through and the group lost power for a while – but they had a lovely lunch by candlelight!
Street banner project
Rise was a proud sponsor of the street banner project by Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries
We had Reconciliation Week banners displayed on St George’s Terrace in the city, and one on Coolbellup Ave in Coolbellup.
Rise cultural experience
Rise recently employed an Aboriginal Employment Consultant. Charmaine Bartlett is working to increase Aboriginal numbers in our workforce, and make our service attractive to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
