How Supported Accommodation Helps Build Independent Living Skills

4 November 2025

What is supported accommodation?

Supported accommodation refers to housing options that give NDIS participants a high level of support.

In this safe and welcoming environment , you can access supports that’ll help you learn new skills, build relationships, and grow your independence.

This blog will explore these skills, along with real-life stories from Rise residents.

Promoting life skills for independent living

1. Cooking

Healthy, tasty food is essential for emotional and physical wellbeing . When you live in supported accommodation, you’ll have a team of support workers who are there to help you prepare meals and develop positive eating habits

Your support will be tailored to your needs. For example, some participants may need help cooking meals (preparing ingredients, following recipes, ensuring safe food practices). Others may be able to cook independently but need advice on planning nutritious meals . Your support team will work with you to understand your food goals and help you achieve them.

2. Social development

Finding opportunities to participate in social activities is part of a healthy emotional life . From attending community gatherings to building friendships and relationships, a rich social life can be incredibly rewarding. Your support team can help you find social activities that interest you and provide assistance with transport and participation.

Tracey Conway lives in one of our Rise supported accommodation homes. Along with her support worker Sue, she attends Music Rocks in Morley to rehearse for live music performances across Perth. Outside of music, Tracey and Sue enjoy visiting Whiteman Park to walk Tracey’s dog. “She’s my best friend” says Tracey of Sue, “she takes me anywhere”.

3. Budgeting

Knowing how to responsibly manage your money is a crucial life skill. This is even more true if you have a casual or part-time job . When you’re on top of your finances, you can work towards savings goals and make purchases that align with your idea of a good life

Your support team can work with you to set these goals and develop budgeting skills to make them a reality.

4. Personal care

Personal care looks different for everyone. It covers a wide range of supports , including:

  • Personal hygiene and grooming
  • Help getting dressed
  • Toileting support
  • Health and medical assistance
  • Mobility and transfer support
  • Fitness and exercise

By talking to you and your network , your support team will develop a comprehensive understanding of your personal care needs. From there, they can provide assistance and also find opportunities to teach you skills relevant to your needs.

Peter Koenig , another of our supported accommodation residents, often goes to the gym with his support worker Marissa. “I enjoy exercise, I like keeping fit because I get stronger ” says Peter. Marissa says Peter is always busy, always doing something. “If he wants to get something done, he will - you’ve just got to help him find a way and that’s what we’re here for at the end of the day”.

5. Enhanced independence

Supported accommodation isn’t just about receiving support; it’s about learning how to support yourself . Your team of support workers will help you grow your skill set so you can increase and maintain your independence. That way, you’ll be prepared to take on new challenges and pursue your goals .
