SIL Personal Care Services | Supported Independent Living at Home

21 July 2026

For people with disabilities, the goal is simple: to live in a home that feels like their own, with the right support around them. That is exactly what Supported Independent Living (SIL)  care is designed to make possible.

SIL personal care is a personalized support that helps you manage daily living, stay safe and build independence at home, with flexible assistance tailored to your needs. It is funded through SIL in your NDIS plan, which helps you have the right support at the right time, so that you can do more for yourself and build the skills to live as independently as you can.

In this article, we look at what SIL personal care involves, who it suits, and how the right support can make daily life at home easier and more independent.

What is SIL personal care?

SIL personal care refers to the support you receive in your home through supported independent living funding. This funding sits within your NDIS plan and covers help or supervision with daily tasks, usually for people with higher support needs who require assistance throughout the day.

SIL is most often delivered in a shared living arrangement, where you live with other NDIS participants and support workers are available around the clock. For some people, it can also be provided in an individual living setting, depending on what is in your plan.

The key idea behind SIL personal care NDIS funding is that support happens where you live. Rather than travelling somewhere to receive help, trained support workers come to you and work alongside you in your own environment.

Who is SIL personal care support for?

SIL is generally suited to people who need a significant amount of support at home, often for several hours each day or overnight. This might include people with physical disability, intellectual disability, psychosocial disability or complex support needs.

If you only need occasional help with a few tasks, the NDIS may fund other types of in-home support instead. Your planner or support coordinator can help you work out which funding type matches your situation.

It is also worth knowing that in-home support is not only for NDIS participants. Even aged people in Australia can access similar assistance through government-funded home care services, which help with household tasks, personal care and staying connected to the community.

What does SIL personal care support include?

The support you receive is shaped by your NDIS plan, your goals and your daily routines. It typically covers:

  • Personal care: Assistance with showering, dressing, grooming and personal hygiene, always delivered in a way that respects your privacy and dignity.
  • Household tasks: Help with cooking, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping and keeping your home in order.
  • Medication support: Assistance to take your medication safely and at the right times.
  • Meal preparation and nutrition: Support to plan and prepare healthy meals, and to build cooking skills of your own over time.
  • Safety and supervision: Depending on your needs, staff may be available overnight or around the clock, so there is always someone to respond if something goes wrong.
  • Skill building: Support workers use an active support approach, encouraging you to try tasks yourself rather than doing everything for you. Over time, this builds confidence and independence.

How does SIL support help you stay independent at home?

Independence does not always mean doing everything alone. Sometimes, it means having the right person beside you so you can do more for yourself.

A support worker might help you prepare a meal, but also encourage you to choose the recipe, gather ingredients and take part in each step. They may help with cleaning, but also work with you to build a routine that becomes easier over time.

This kind of personalised home care can make a real difference because support is not only focused on tasks. It is also focused on skills, confidence and safety.

Why is safety important in SIL personal care?

Home should feel safe. If you need help with mobility, personal care, medication or overnight support, your support plan should clearly outline what needs to happen and when.

A good support plan helps everyone understand your needs. It can include your routines, health information, communication preferences, risks, goals and what to do if something changes.

This is especially important if more than one support worker is involved. When your team is on the same page, your support feels more consistent and less stressful.

Can SIL personal care support change over time?

Yes. Your needs may change as your health, confidence, goals or living situation changes. You may need more support during a difficult period, or less support as you build new skills.

That is why regular conversations are important. Your provider, support coordinator and NDIS planner can help you review what is working and what may need to change.

If your plan no longer reflects your needs, you may need evidence from your support team or health professionals before a plan review. Keeping clear records can help show the type and level of support you need at home.

How do you access SIL personal care?

SIL funding must be included in your NDIS plan before a provider can deliver these supports. The process usually involves:

  • Assessments: Reports from your therapists and allied health professionals that show the level of support you need at home.
  • A home and living request: Your support coordinator or planner helps you put forward the case for SIL as part of your plan.
  • Choosing a provider: Once SIL is approved, you choose a provider whose homes, staff and approach feel right for you.

If you are new to this process, the guide on how to access NDIS Supported Independent Living funding walks through each step in more detail.
